When the Dot NET gTLD was first established in 1985, along with the first domain name extensions on the Internet, it was supposed to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure entities. As there were no particular restrictions about the usage of the top-level extension, though, .NET domains were taken and used for different purposes and by quite a few people. This TLD represents a wonderful alternative to .COM, notably if the desired domain with the latter domain extension is not free for registration.
